It was originally erected on July 13, 1923 to advertise a housing development called “Hollywoodland” in the hills above the Hollywood district of Chinatown, and intended to last only 18 months, but it’s still there and remains one of the most iconic signs in America, making this day
NATIONAL HOLLYWOOD SIGN DAY!
It has fallen into disrepair and been renovated numerous times, and in 1949 the “LAND” was removed and the Hollywood sign as we know it today was left. It remains a symbol of America’s movie industry, the most vibrant, successful and influential motion picture business on the planet.
In bold white letters thirty feet wide and fifty feet tall, and lit up like a movie premier every night, this landmark sign has come to embody Hollywood in all it’s artistic glory and razzle-dazzle, and also its broken dreams and heartbreak (a disappointed starlet once committed suicide by leaping from the sign).
It has also inspired other cities all over the world to erect similar signs announcing themselves, and there is a replica Hollywood sign in Mutanj, Serbia, presumably home to many fans of America cinema.
All the stars in Hollywood are not human, and this 103 year-old wooden sign remains one of its biggest attractions.
