Who’s from Earth, Third Stone from the Sun? A show of hands, please.
Good, it’s almost unanimous, as good a reason as any for celebrating
EARTH DAY!
Our home planet is in the spotlight today, the place that gave us all life, love and all those great sunsets. Powered by the Sun, 70% covered by water and inhabited by millions of species of living things, today we reflect on the fact that we’ve been poor houseguests to our bountiful host, and maybe we should clean up our act before our world is uninhabitable for ourselves.
The Earth itself is no danger, mind you, just us. Our planet has played host in the past to flaming continents of lava, endless jungles of ferns, masses of gigantic lizards and mile-thick sheets of ice, and outlasted them all, emerging none the worse for wear when they were gone. For the past 50,000 years or so we humans have been the dominant creatures dancing across her surface, and frankly, making nuisances of ourselves, gouging ugly holes in the earth, burning everything that would catch fire and mucking up the land and water with our personal and industrial wastes.
In recent years, the hangover of the Industrial Revolution has worn off, and the resulting pollution has appalled us, darkening our skies, leeching into our soil and even corroding the coral reefs in the ocean, as well as killing lots of us in new and imaginative ways. And so we set aside this day to vow to do better, and be better guests to our gracious host.
