It was tentatively decided to appoint a committee to debate the possibility of forming a commission empowered to discuss empaneling a Special Board to study the calendar year for 6 months and issue nonbinding recommendations. That’s how today came, eventually, to be known as
INTERNATIONAL UNITED NATIONS DAY!
Founded by a wounded and shell shocked world at the close of World War 2, the United Nations was seen as mankind’s last best hope for an end to the wars that destroy us.
The idea was to have a governing body with such convoluted rules, led by a Secretary General with a completely unpronounceable name, who then throws as many enemies as possible together into a big room where they takes turns yelling, making the adoption of a resolution so tedious, that we would all be too exasperated to bother declaring war on anyone.
Well, that idea didn’t work, but at least the United Nations is grand entertainment. Or, a sad reminder of What Might Have Been, depending on your point of view. Still, both skeptics and supporters alike are hoping peace and harmony catches on in the world one of these days, and just maybe the United Nations will be more than a tourist attraction on the East River.
