TODAY’S NATIONAL DAY, 10/16/23 – DICTIONARY DAY!

old_dictionaries_590Well, pluck my Funk & Wagnall’s, Webster! Here’s a holiday close to Password Man’s heart,

NATIONAL DICTIONARY DAY!

Hot on the heels of “National English Language Day,” today we celebrate that big fat book with painted page edges and little thumb indents for each letter of the alphabet.

For those of us fascinated with vocabulary, this is a sacred book, the one that holds the words! It tells us what they all mean, how to pronounce them, and how they are used, as well as some neat synonyms and antonyms.

These days our dictionaries are handier than ever, built right in to our computers, along with a Thesaurus too, a mouse click away from the proper spelling of “hieroglyphics,” or finding just the right word to express one’s self, such as “jubilant.

•Suggested Activities: Finding out what the definition of “is” is.
