Who didn’t grow up a huge fan of that PhD in English Literature, Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known to children everywhere as Dr. Seuss?
Following his academic career at Dartmouth and Oxford, this son and grandson of German-American brewmasters moved from Springfield, Massachusetts to New York City in 1927 to pursue a writing and illustrating career.
Geisel became a cartoonist in popular magazines, also supporting himself and his wife with commercial illustration during The Great Depression. He published his first illustrated children’s book in 1936, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” and Dr. Seuss was born.
Like Marvin K. Mooney, he won’t leave, nor will the Lorax, the Sneetches, the Ooblek or Yertle the Turtle. As well as blowing their little minds with crazy creatures and wacky stories, the good Doctor Seuss has made avid readers out of generations of toddlers, whose earliest memories tell them that the good times come out of books. So toss Green Eggs And Ham on the griddle and crack open “One Fish ,Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” for yourself and the little ones.
