. On this date in 1865, Abraham Lincoln signed the Thirteenth Amendment to The Constitution, making today
NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY!
The Civil War was not yet over, but the Confederacy was crumbling, and The Union was laying down the law for peacetime, and forever.
Slavery was abolished, period, amen, don’t even think about it. Here it is, the entire Thirteenth Amendment, short and sweet:
“Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
