NATIONAL SKYSCRAPER APPRECIATION DAY!

Who hasn’t marveled at our gleaming spires that seem to reach the clouds? Well, guess what? Some of them do reach the clouds, dwarfing the first modern skyscraper, the 22 story triangular-shaped Flatiron Building in New York City, built in 1857 with water-powered elevators.

Today’s behemoths can run to over 100 stories, with silent hydraulic elevators that can whisk 100 people up to the nosebleed floors in minutes.

Why do we build such tall buildings? Limited available land and greater efficiency, but mostly because we can. And damn, they’re beautiful, either gleaming in the sun or all lit up at night.

Mankind has been building it bigger and better ever since we started improving on the cave, and we’re not done yet. This will be a nice place if we ever finish it. Look, up in the sky, it’s another beautiful skyscraper!
