Barnum's Animal Crackersmarx-brothersToday we get a Two’fer holiday for the price of one name. By Margaret Dumont and all that is holy, this day we celebrate

NATIONAL ANIMAL CRACKERS DAY!

Ah, Animal Crackers . . . You know them, you love them, you consumed them by the string-handled boxful as a child.

How many of us picky little eaters received half our nutrition from these tasty little zebras, lions, camels and elephants? When you were done, you had a little box painted like a circus train to play with while you watched Marx Brothers movies on TV.

One of the best of their 13 films was “Animal Crackers,” with honorary 5th Marx Brother Margaret Dumont (the former Daisy Baker from Brooklyn) playing her usual ditzy wealthy dowager, a superb comic foil to Groucho’s rapier wit. There’s no law preventing us from doing this today, so bust out the Animal Crackers and crank up the DVR.

•Suggested Activities: Nibbling hippopotami, singing “Hooray For Captain Spaulding.”
