TODAY’S NATIONAL DAY, 6/25/20 – GLOBAL BEATLES DAY!

All You Need Is Love broadcastWe all know they were the biggest pop music phenomenon to hit American shores, and that they pushed the envelope of music in every direction, and blew our minds again and again, but the Beatles were not only huge in America, but all over the world, something unprecedented for a Rock & Roll band from a gritty port city in England, and today is

GLOBAL BEATLES DAY!

It was June 25, 1967 when The Beatles starred in the world’s first live global television link, where 400 million people in 26 countries watched the Beatles on the BBC, with a small orchestra and some famous friends singing “All You Need Is Love” in glorious Black & White (Britain didn’t have color TV yet).

The BBC had commissioned the Beatles to write a song as the British entry in “Our World,” their ambitious live TV broadcast featuring contributions from artists from 19 countries (Maria Callas and Pablo Picasso among them), and the Beatles’ segment closed the show. Along with Mick Jagger, Graham Nash, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithful and the Keiths, Moon and Richards, they were recording the single that would hit #1 on 3 continents. The “All You Need Is Love” broadcast kicked off the Summer of Love in 1967, and nothing has been quite the same ever since.
