TODAY’S NATIONAL DAY, 1/20/19 – AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION DAY!

ACLUIf America always acted like America should, we wouldn’t need them, but, like any other great idea, there are kinks to be worked out, and wrongs to be righted. There are people who make it their jobs to ensure that America acts like America to everybody, and today we celebrate

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION DAY!

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was born on this day in 1920 in New York City, an organization of lawyers and educators whose stated mission is “To defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.” The ACLU was the first civil liberties organization in America not dedicated to a single cause, but instead representing any and all people against threats to their civil liberties, even unpopular, idiotic or even despicable causes. Their thinking is, the Right to Free Speech means exactly what it says, and it is meaningless unless everyone is free to speak. As well as being legal advocates for the persecuted, the ACLU lobbies state, local and federal governments to broaden Human Rights laws, and educates Americans on their Constitutional protections and the obligations of civil authority. The hope is that you never need the ACLU to defend you, but you are damned glad they are there if the day ever comes when it is your voice being silenced, your rights being denied. They will have your back.
