NATIONAL SCIENCE FICTION DAY!

What Jules Verne started, others took up with a passion and gave us the literary genre Science Fiction, great writers like Heinlein, Asimov, Herbert, Bradbury and so many others. Of course filmmakers got in on the act and have delivered some of our most memorable movies, either adapting classic sci-fi books or writing original screenplays, from “The Day The Earth Stood Still” to the “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” franchises to “Alien,” “Predator” and the quirky masterpiece, “District 9.” Contrary to some criticism, Science Fiction is not all about the impossible gadgets, weapons, robots or strange creatures, they are only part of the attraction. The reality is that great writing is what makes great Science Fiction, delivering riveting storytelling, unforgettable characters and universal themes that stand up to any literature or film. We all have our favorite tales of imagination, insight, and grand entertainment, and beloved characters we feel we have come to know personally, even those of the non-human variety. Pick up “Stranger In A Strange Land” by Robert Heinlein and you’ll be hooked. Klaatu, Barada, Nikto.
